Voters in California will decide whether to approve a proposition to redraw the state’s congressional map.
The proposal, which could erase as many as five Republican districts, is aimed at countering an unprecedented state-by-state redistricting battle, which started when Texas Republicans heeded President Donald Trump’s demand that they redraw their boundaries to help the GOP retain control of the House in the midterms.

California’s Proposition 50 is a yes-or-no question that asks voters whether they authorize temporary changes to congressional district maps already approved by state lawmakers. Those new districts would be in place for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections. After the 2030 U.S. Census, California’s independent redistricting commission would resume drawing the maps.
Many Californians could see their representative change based on the new congressional district maps approved by lawmakers in August.
