Trump says Jewish people who support Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor are ‘stupid’

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that any Jewish person who votes for Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, is “stupid.”
“Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Mamdani, who is a critic of the Israeli government, has repeatedly pushed back on allegations that he’s antisemitic, a charge he said in June “pains me.”
“I’ve said at every opportunity that there is no room for antisemitism in this city, in this country. I’ve said that because that is something I personally believe,” he said.
Mamdani’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Mamdani has also spoken out about the Islamophobic attacks he has faced as the city’s potential first Muslim mayor. In their second debate, Mamdani charged that his rivals, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, were accusing him of antisemitism in part because of his religion. “I think much of it has to do with the fact that I am the first Muslim candidate to be on the precipice of winning this election,” he said.
Trump, a New York native, has repeatedly weighed in on the mayoral race, threatening to withhold federal funding from his hometown if Mamdani wins the election. On Monday, he urged voters to cast their ballots for Cuomo, with whom he often clashed during his first term, when Cuomo was New York’s governor.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Monday.
The president has been accused of antisemitism himself over the years, including for repeatedly invoking a dual loyalty trope about Jews and Israel.
“Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion,” Trump said in an interview with ex-aide Sebastian Gorka last year.
“They hate everything about Israel, and they should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said then.
He’s also referred to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, as a “highly overrated Jewish Governor” who “for strictly political reasons, refused to acknowledge that I am the best friend that Israel, and the Jewish people, ever had.” He’s also referred to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish, as “a Palestinian.”
At a campaign event last year called “Fighting Antisemitism in America,” Trump complained that he wasn’t getting enough support from Jewish voters and said they “would have a lot to do with a loss” if he didn’t win the election.
New Yorkers flocked to the polls in every borough during early voting, with a record 735,000 ballots cast ahead of Election Day. But all three campaigns were still out there trying to round up as many votes as possible. NBC New York’s Andrew Siff reports.
